Why Marks Dropped in 2026 But Rank Windows Stayed Same

A lot of students are confused this year. The scores appear lower, but the cutoffs expected aren't significantly different.

Here's why.

1. Paper Difficulty Across

Physics and Chemistry sections were concept-heavy and calculation-intensive. When the difficulty is high:

  • Average score drops
  • Top scores compress
  • Rank distribution shifts downward

2. There is no change in the number of Top Performers

Elite aspirants who score 690+ remain in the same numbers each year. Therefore:

  • Top ranks remain occupied
  • Seat competition unchanged

3. Relative Ranking System

NEET rating is based on how well it performs in comparison to other schools but not necessarily marks.

Example:

If the score of the top spot falls from 720 to 715, the scores of everyone decrease, but the rankings remain similar.

4. More Competition Pool

Droppers and repeaters that are more serious are appearing every year, particularly in AIIMS-related targets.

The most important observations

  • In times when the paper is relatively easy (such 2021 and 2023-24) the scores for qualifying tend to increase.

  • When the test is more difficult (like 2022 and 2020) the marks required generally decrease.

  • All through the years, the reserved groups (OBC, EWS, SC, ST) consistently remain approximately 15-30 points lower than the general category for the top institutions like AIIMS Delhi. This is a fairly steady difference.

What Does This Mean for 2026?

  • If the test is easy, the score required for the top AIIMS (AIIMS Delhi in particular) could be in the range of 700-715+ (General category).

  • In the event that your paper is difficult the expected range may drop to around 700-800 (General category).

Secure Target for Aspirants

To remain secure regardless of difficulties on the paper, striving for a score of 680+ marks is a solid and reliable objective.

Didn’t Get AIIMS? Here’s What to Do Next

If AIIMS does not happen the medical journey isn't over. AIIMS is highly regarded however it's not the only way to become an excellent doctor What you can do:

1.) Top Government Medical Colleges (Non-AIIMS)

Many central and state government institutions provide excellent MBBS training, patient interaction and career opportunities.

  • Top state GMCs (Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, etc.)
  • Colleges under central universities
  • Colleges that are JIPMER-like, like the traditional universities (through NEET now)

In reality, a good government college MBBS with a high rank in PG can beat AIIMS MBBS by itself.

2.) New AIIMS or Lower-Rank AIIMS

If the best AIIMS campuses aren't within access, the newer campuses are still viable options

  • Modern infrastructure
  • Good pipeline for faculty
  • Same MBBS degree value
  • Reputation is rapidly improving

3.) Private Medical Colleges (If the budget allows)

Private colleges may be a last resort when:

  • You would like to get MBBS within the same year
  • You can pay for fees or receive an award
  • You would rather stay in India

Quality is different, so pick cautiously.

4.) Drop Year (If Your Score is Close)

Take a second look If:

  • You scored just short of the threshold
  • You made avoidable mistakes
  • Your foundations are solid
  • You are mentally prepared to face the new year.

Many of the top players are droppers.

5.) Other Medical & Allied Fields

Healthcare offers many careers with high impact that go beyond MBBS:

  • BDS (Dentistry)
  • BAMS, BHMS, BAMS / BHMS /
  • BPT (Physiotherapy)
  • BSc Nursing
  • Biomedical Sciences
  • Pharmacy

They can lead to great career opportunities in India as well as abroad.

6.) Abroad MBBS Option

Some students choose international medical programs due to:

  • Lower competition
  • Admissions with structured admission
  • Curriculum comparable to the one you have in your school.

Needs strict verification (recognition license exams, recognition etc. ).

The Most important Truth

Your future will be determined more by what you do after your admission than on where you begin.

Many of the top surgeons, specialists and researchers didn't take part in studies at AIIMS However, they were able to excel in PG, expertise and clinical practice. Some of India’s best doctors come from non-AIIMS government colleges. AIIMS is prestigious, but it’s not the only path.

FAQ

1.Does rank hold more weight than marks to AIIMS admission?

Yes. NEET counselling is not on the basis of raw marks but All India Rank. Marks are just important as they define your rank.

2.Why was the reduction in marks observed in NEET 2026 and rank windows remained the same?

When the paper is tougher, everyone scores low but in a relative performance. Thus, despite falling marks, the level of competition maintains the rank ranges almost the same.

3.Is the cut off the same across AIIMS?

No. The cut offs of older and more prestigious institutes are significantly higher than new ones. As an illustration, AIIMS Jodhpur usually scores below AIIMS Delhi yet it demands exceptionally high scores.
