NEET UG 2026 Stray Vacancy Round: Dates, Registration & Result

Missed out on an MBBS or BDS seat in the earlier rounds of NEET counselling? There is still the Stray Vacancy Round to watch.

MCC has scheduled the NEET UG 2026 Online Stray Vacancy Round in October. Registration is due to open on October 12, followed by choice filling, allotment and college reporting. The entire process runs within a fairly short window, so this is a good time to sort out your documents and make a realistic list of colleges you would actually join.

The Stray Vacancy Round is not simply another repeat of Round 3. The seats available will depend on the vacancies left after the previous counselling process, and eligibility also depends on a candidate's counselling status. That makes it important to check the MCC rules and current vacancy list before filling any choices.

NEET UG 2026 Stray Vacancy Round Dates

Here is the schedule currently announced for the round:

Event Date
Registration and Fee Payment October 12–14, 2026
Choice Filling October 12–15, 2026
Choice Locking October 14, 4 PM to October 15, 10 AM
Seat Allotment Processing October 15–16, 2026
Stray Vacancy Result October 17, 2026
Reporting at Allotted College October 19–26, 2026

There isn't much breathing room between these stages. Choice locking closes on the morning of October 15 and allotment processing begins the same day. If you wait for registration to open before researching colleges, fees and locations, you may end up making choices in a hurry.

What Is the NEET UG Stray Vacancy Round?

After the main rounds of counselling, some seats can remain vacant. The Stray Vacancy Round is held to allot eligible remaining seats to candidates who meet the conditions laid down for this stage.

What matters here is the latest vacancy position.

A college that showed vacant seats earlier may not necessarily have the same seats available when stray-round choices open. Similarly, seats can become available as the counselling process moves ahead.

So, before preparing your final preference list, check the seat matrix released for this round rather than working from an old screenshot or an earlier vacancy list.

Who Can Apply for the NEET UG 2026 Stray Vacancy Round?

This question needs a little more care than a simple yes or no.

Being NEET-qualified does not automatically make someone eligible for every seat in the Stray Vacancy Round. A candidate's position in the earlier counselling rounds can matter too.

Before registering, check your own counselling status and make sure you meet the conditions for the course, quota and college you intend to select.

This is particularly important if you were allotted or joined a seat during an earlier round. Don't use another student's situation as a guide for your own eligibility. Check the rules applicable to your case on the MCC counselling portal.

NEET UG Stray Vacancy Registration 2026

Registration and fee payment are scheduled between October 12 and October 14.

The process will be carried out through the MCC UG counselling portal. Once registration opens, eligible candidates can log in, enter the required information, complete the form and pay the applicable fee.

Keep the confirmation details after submitting the form.

There is no real advantage in leaving registration until the final few hours. A payment failure or login problem is much easier to deal with when there is still time left before the deadline.

How to Fill Choices in the Stray Vacancy Round

This is probably the part where students need to slow down rather than rush.

Choice filling is scheduled from October 12 to October 15, with locking from 4 PM on October 14 until 10 AM on October 15.

Before putting a college on your list, find out what joining it would actually involve.

Check the course and seat category first. Then look at the tuition fee, location, hostel arrangements and other admission expenses. For private or deemed institutions in particular, don't assume that a vacant seat means an affordable seat.

Your preference order should reflect where you would genuinely like to study.

For example, if you would choose College B over College A when both were offered to you, College B normally belongs higher in your preference order. Don't reverse the order merely because you think one college may have a lower closing rank.

Should You Use Previous Closing Ranks?

Yes, but only as a reference.

Last year's closing rank can give you some idea of what happened in an earlier counselling cycle. It cannot tell you exactly where a college will close in the NEET UG 2026 Stray Vacancy Round.

The number of available seats can be different. The pool of eligible candidates can also change, as can their choices.

Use previous ranks to understand the college, not as a promise that a seat will be available at a particular score or rank.

NEET UG 2026 Stray Vacancy Result

MCC is scheduled to process the allotment on October 15 and 16, with the result due on October 17, 2026.

Once the result comes out, check the allotted college, course and category carefully. If you receive a seat, download the relevant allotment document and read the reporting instructions before travelling.

Don't stop after seeing the college name on the result. The admission is completed only after the required reporting and college formalities are finished.

College Reporting From October 19

The reporting window is scheduled from October 19 to October 26, 2026.

That gives allotted candidates only a few days to complete the next stage.

If your college is outside your home city, check travel arrangements as soon as the result is clear. At the same time, speak to the institution if you need clarification about reporting time, fees or documents.

It is much easier to sort these things out from home than after reaching the college with an incomplete file.

Documents to Keep Ready

You don't need to wait for October 17 to start arranging your certificates.

Keep your NEET UG 2026 admit card and scorecard together with your Class 10 and Class 12 documents. You should also have a valid photo ID, passport-size photographs and the applicable category or PwD certificate, if relevant.

After allotment, keep the provisional allotment letter with these documents as well.

The allotted institution may ask for additional documents depending on the candidate or course. Check its reporting instructions before leaving home.

A simple way to manage the paperwork is to keep originals in one folder and photocopies in another. Scanned copies can also be useful as a backup, although they do not replace originals where physical verification is required.

Check Fees Before Adding a College

Fee information deserves its own check during the stray round.

Students sometimes focus so heavily on getting an MBBS or BDS seat that they add a college first and research its fees later.

Do it the other way around.

If you are considering a private or deemed university, find out the tuition fee and other significant expenses before locking that college. Also consider whether you are genuinely willing to move to that location.

A preference list works better when every college on it is somewhere you are prepared to join.

What to Do Before October 12

You can finish quite a lot before registration even opens.

Gather your certificates. Keep your MCC login information accessible. Decide which states or cities you are comfortable with and what fee range is practical for you.

You can also make a rough college list now.

Once MCC publishes the relevant vacancy information, compare your list with the seats actually available and then prepare your final preferences.

That is much easier than starting from zero during the choice-filling window.

One More Thing: Keep Checking MCC

Counselling schedules can change.

The current schedule gives October 12–14 for registration, October 17 for the result and October 19–26 for reporting, but candidates should still check the latest MCC notices as each stage approaches.

The same applies to the vacancy matrix. Use the list meant for the current round rather than an older version circulating on social media or messaging groups.
